What is Microprocessor 8086 in detail PU Past Paper

Microprocessor 8086

  • Enhanced version of 8085.
  • Design by Intel 1976.
  • 16 bit microprocessor which have 20 address lines
  • 16 data lines that provide more than 1MB storage.
  • Powerful instruction set which provide operation like as

FEATURES OF 8086 MICROPROCCESOR

  1. It has an instruction queue which is capable of storing six instruction bytes from memory resulting in a fast processor.
  2. It was 16 bit first processor having 16 bit ALU, 16 bit data bus result in fast processing.

Support two modes of operation.

  • Maximum modes.
  • Minimum modes.
  • Suitable for system having multiple processors.
  • Suitable for system having single processor.

Available in 3-version

  1. 8086 5MHZ
  2. 8086 8MHZ
  3. 8086 10MHZ

It uses 2 stages of pipeline.

  1. Fetch storage.
  2. Execute stage with improve performance.
  3. The fetch stage can pre fetch up to 6 bytes of instruction and store them in queue.
  4. Execute stage execute these instruction one by one.
  5. It consists of 29000 transistor comparison between 8086 and 8085 microprocessor.
  • Size ----8085 is 8 bit ,8086 is 16 bit.
  • Address bus -----8085 is 16 bit, 8086 is 20 bit.
  • Memory 8085 can access 20 kb ,8086 is 1mb.
  • Instruction ---8085 don’t have any instruction 8086 have instruction queue.
  • Pipelining 8085 does not support pipelining but8086 support pipelining.
  • 8085 cost is very low as compared to 8086.
